Portugal is a country in southern Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula, partly bordering Spain. Its location by the Atlantic Ocean has influenced many aspects of its culture: salt cod and grilled sardines are national dishes, the Algarve's beaches are popular and much of the country's architecture dates from the 15th to 18th centuries, when Portugal was a powerful maritime empire.

The country of Portugal lies in southwestern Europe at the foot of the Atlantic Ocean. The Portuguese Republic borders Spain only on its eastern side.

Under the control of Portugal there are several islands located in the Atlantic Ocean, among them you can also find the Azores and Madeira Islands known to many travelers who come to this region.

The citizens of the Portuguese Republic are referred to in the vernacular as Portuguese, while their official language in the country is Portuguese.

In its past, the Portuguese Empire was one of the most significant in the world, when it made quite a few discoveries and remote countries between the 15th century and the 17th century.

In this framework, many ships sailed from Portugal to different destinations in the whole world with the aim of discovering different countries and distant territories.

When the Portuguese arrived at a new country and wanted to annex it to the Portuguese Empire, they placed a large stone known in Portuguese as Padreau within the boundaries of the country.

Portugal's control was so significant that today quite a few countries have annexed the Portuguese language as their official language.

Among the countries you can find quite a few countries that were previously under the control of the Portuguese Empire.

Among the known countries you can find Brazil, Angola and even Macao which is in the Far East.

Portugal is a republican democratic country, the conduct of the country is according to the agreements reached with the legislation that came into effect in 1976 after the end of the Clove Revolution.

The capital city of Portugal is Lisbon, which is also the largest city in the country.

The president of Portugal is elected in democratic elections which are held once every 5 years.

The role of the president is mainly a representative role and not a role that should make the important decisions related to the country.

The Parliament of Portugal has about 230 members, the parliamentary elections are held every 4 years unlike the presidential elections which are held every 5 years.

Unlike the prestige and wealth of Portugal in the previous centuries, today Portugal is one of the poorest countries in Europe.

A large part of the residents of Portugal are engaged in agriculture in order to be able to take care of themselves for a basic lifestyle. Until 1960, agriculture was the main occupation of the country's residents.

Starting in 1960, other industries entered that employed quite a few residents of Portugal, which undoubtedly caused the country to develop and become a slightly more advanced country.

Iron and steel are undoubtedly the most significant natural treasures that Portugal has to offer to the whole world. Several oil refineries have been established in the country, which helps Portugal maintain economic stability.

Portugal began its journey somewhere in 1249 when King Afonso III conquered the city of Faro, which is now located in the south of Portugal.

The Portuguese kingdom was the first Christian kingdom in Europe in those years.

What is special is that the borders of Portugal have not changed at all over the years, and the borders of the country that were known in the 13th century are the borders of the country even in the present era.

Over the years, Portugal has become one of the most powerful and significant countries in the world.

The Portuguese Empire was undoubtedly a significant empire which was difficult to deal with.

Between the 15th and 17th centuries, Portugal began to deepen its grip on many countries overseas. Portuguese citizens who were called "seamen" went on state missions to discover remote continents and countries.

The seafarers were the ones who discovered the sea route between Europe and India.

In addition, the Treaty of Turdesias was signed in these years, dividing all the countries discovered by Portugal between the Spanish Empire and the Portuguese Empire.

The 19th century was the least stable in Portugal's history.

Many disputes between the brothers Miguel and Pedro who were the King of Portugal and the Emperor of Brazil respectively caused quite a bit of trouble in the country.

The peak came when a civil war broke out between 1832 and 1834.

Following the fraternal war, a new constitution was announced which took authoritative effect during the year 1836.

Until 1910, the government in Portugal was a hereditary monarchy.

In 1910 Portugal was declared a republican country where the government is not hereditary. King Manuel II went into exile in the United Kingdom.

Between 1932 and 1968 the dictator Antonio de Oliveira Salazar ruled Portugal.

These were undoubtedly very difficult years for the citizens of Portugal who had to get used to a dictatorship for the first time in their history.

During the Second World War, Oliveira Salazar did not take a preference between the Allies and the Axis countries.

During the war, Oliveira Salazar even helped the Allies and allowed them to use the Azores which were under Portuguese control as their base.

This strategy paid off for him when Portugal was one of the only countries in Europe that was not damaged during World War II.

In 1945, at the end of World War II, Portugal controlled many countries around the world.

Portugal's deployment was so extensive that it reached many countries in Africa and East Asia.

Oliveira Salazar claimed that he did not think that it was necessary to continue expanding the colonies that were under the control of Portugal, but he claimed that he must maintain control over all these countries.

Although many countries that were under Portuguese control demanded to get their independence, Oliveira Salazar thought it was a historical mistake and refused to do so.

The year 1974 was very significant in the history of Portugal. Young military officers in the Portuguese army who were fed up with the conservative government that was customary in those years in Portugal led a non-violent revolution. The revolution was called the "Clove Revolution".

The revolution overthrew the dictatorial government in Portugal, which allowed Portugal to build a democracy. Following the Clove Revolution, several countries were freed from Portuguese rule, including Angola and Mozambique.

The first democratic elections in the country were held in 1976, about two years after the Clove Revolution. In these elections, Mario Suarez came to power with a social worldview. Suarez's government had quite a bit of opposition from both the left and the right, which caused him to leave his throne in 1978.

In those years there were exchanges of thrones in power between the left-wing parties and between the conservative parties identified with the right. In 1983 Suaresh came to power again for two more years until 1985.

The last vestige of the Portuguese empire was Macau, when in 1999 Portugal decided to transfer control of the country to China.

Something that put an end to Portugal's control in various countries around the world, a reminder of the achievements of the Portuguese Empire.

The weather in Portugal?

Most of the year the weather in Portugal is very comfortable and friendly.

This is perhaps one of the main reasons why many tourists come to the country all year round.

Unlike other European countries that suffer from rainy and cold weather for a significant part of the year, the weather in Portugal is Mediterranean weather.

The Jews in Portugal

The first evidence of the arrival of Jews in Portugal can already be seen during the 12th century. During these years, a number of Jewish quarters were established in the capital city of Portugal, Lisbon.

In 1492 with the expulsion of the Jews from Spain, the Portuguese king allowed 150 Jews to settle in Portugal and thus essentially saved their lives.

In 1496 the expulsion of Portugal took place which was very similar to the expulsion of Spain.

Many Jews from the country who were not ready to convert their religion were deported to different countries all over the world.

This was undoubtedly the most critical turning point in Portugal's attitude towards the Jews who lived within it.

Over the years, many Jews were allowed to return to Portugal, but most of them discovered that the country they left with the deportation of Portuguese Jews had changed a lot.

Some of them agreed to return and live in Portugal in order to continue their lives from the point where they left off.

But quite a few Jews preferred not to live in the country, and found themselves moving between different countries around the world.

As of today, close to 1000 Jews live in Portugal.

Most of the Jews are in the capital city of Lisbon, but other Jewish districts can be found in other large cities such as Porto.

The origin of the name is Portugal

Like many names of countries in the world, the name of Portugal also came from the Latin language. "Portos-Cala" is the root from which the name of Portugal is derived. Calais was one of the primitive settlements that lived in northern Portugal at the foot of the Douro River.

During the Middle Ages, the Visigoths began to call the inhabitants of Calais by the name of Portugalla. Between the seventh and eighth centuries the name was changed to Portugal. From this name is also derived the current name of Portugal which accompanies it to this very day. The city of Porto for example is one of the most central cities in Portugal. The name of the city is the interpretation of the word port in Portuguese. This is actually the best explanation for the interpretation of the name Portugal, the country was over the years one of the most significant countries for the transfer of goods to Europe. Portugal is located on a coastal strip in southern Europe, which certainly gives it quite a few advantages in moving goods to Europe. This is actually the most common and well-known explanation for the name of Portugal as of the time we are in.

Information about Corona Virus in Portugal

For Israelis who are on the Portugal-Israel route, there are three key points that are important to know when it comes to the corona tests, with the first point concerning recognizing what the current requirement is regarding the corona test upon entering Portugal and Israel, how should one behave if the flight between the two countries was made via a connecting flight, and what are the requirements of the airlines the difference

As of August 2021, the majority of airlines still require passengers to undergo a PCR test as a necessary condition for boarding the plane, with this requirement also relevant to vaccinated citizens and even those who have recovered.

There is a requirement for a health declaration from Israel or from any destination to Portugal in the following link:

What are the costs of corona tests in Portugal?

The price of a corona test in Portugal ranges from 60-100 euros. In most settings, you can arrange an appointment for an online test, and here we will recommend four that are considered safe and reliable.

The corona test can be done online without the hospitals in the country CRUZ VERMELHA  It is a chain of hospitals with branches spread all over the country and the price of the test is 60 euros. The hospital network guarantees results within a day, and in most cases you will receive a result in less than 24 hours. Appointments for tests can be arranged through the network's website.

Another option for conducting corona tests in Portugal is through a laboratory CEDOC located in the center of Lisbon. Here, too, you can make an appointment online when the cost of the test is 69 euros.

In addition to the laboratory in Lisbon, there are two other laboratory chains in the country that perform corona testing. It is about the laboratories GERMANO DE SOUSA ו-JOAQUIM CHAVES in which the cost of the test is higher and stands at 100 euros.

It is important to make sure during the test that you have provided complete and correct details about yourself and demand that the results of the tests also arrive in English. In addition to this, it is important to check that there are frameworks and airlines that require tests within 48 hours and not 72 hours.
